HC Deb 24 January 1973 vol 849 cc431-4
3. Mr. Idris Owen

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many applications for loan sanction for new sewage works have been received by his Department since his statement of 27th April; and whether he will list them.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Environment (Mr. Eldon Griffiths)

Fifty-two applications have been received in this period for new sewage treatment works and 92 for extensions to existing works costing over £100,000. I will, with permission, list these in the OFFICIAL REPORT. None of these was made in advance of need under the arrangements announced on 27th April 1972. Local authorities can, of course, carry out smaller schemes without reference to my right hon. and learned Friend.

Mr. Owen

I am obliged for that answer, but is my hon. Friend aware that many housing development schemes for which planning permission could be granted are held up for want of sewage treatment facilities? Will he give an assurance that the new Water Bill provisions announced today will not create a hiatus because of transfer of power from existing sewerage authorities to the new authority?

Mr. Griffiths

Yes, Sir. I have had meetings with those who will be concerned in the transitional period and I can assure my hon. Friend that we shall take all possible steps to see that there is no hiatus in this important matter.

Following are the lists:
