HC Deb 19 February 1973 vol 851 c12
12. Mr. Tom King

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications whether he will give a general direction to the Post Office to review its policy of centralisation.

Sir J. Eden

No, Sir.

Mr. King

Is my right hon. Friend aware that there is concern about the Post Office policy of centralising sorting so that from certain towns all letters are sent to another town and most of them have to come back again? Is this practice beneficial either in efficiency or in the cost savings that the Post Office hopes to make?

Sir J. Eden

The method of operation and decisions affecting the degree of concentration must be matters for the Post Office. The situation in my hon. Friend's constituency is a matter for the Post Office, but I understand that no arrangement exists whereby letters posted in Bridgwater are sent to Taunton and back. I have no doubt that the Post Office will have noted my hon. Friend's interest in this matter and will be in touch with him.
