HC Deb 07 November 1972 vol 845 cc793-4
Mr. Bowden

I beg leave to present a Petition on behalf of the inshore fishermen in the Brighton area, who are most concerned about the harmful effects of beam-trawling in waters off the Sussex coast. The Petition is signed by 19 people. The Petition concludes as follows: Wherefore your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House do most urgently debate the conservation of Britain's fishing grounds and do give protection to British inshore fishermen in the full implementation of the clause against intruders in the Convention on the Continental Shelf, 1958, and that your Honourable House do approve to ban all beam-trawling along the South coast except by local trawl permits to meet area needs, and that your Honourable House do enforce existing regulations for conservation by establishing a fast and adequate naval patrol system competent to protect all areas under its control and supervision. And urges your Honourable House to call for an immediate inquiry into these matters. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever humbly pray.

To lie upon the Table.
