HC Deb 24 May 1972 vol 837 c1406
1. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when he hopes to announce his decision on the future of school camps in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

The Under-Secretary of State for Health and Education, Scottish Office (Mr. Hector Monro)

30th June.

Mr. Dalyell

Why is this decision taking so long? Is not the Minister embarrassed? On 20th April I withdrew my Adjournment debate on school camps at his request, on his promise that the decision would come soon. If the decision is to come on Friday, 30th June, why cannot we be told now? Be a Minister.

Mr. Monro

We have not yet completed discussions with the Camps Association on the future of the camps. When we have done so I will make an announcement.

Mr. Milian

Will the Minister think long and hard before discontinuing the camps? Why cannot they be kept in operation until the new regional authorities take over and can decide whether they wish to continue to operate them?

Mr. Monro

These are all points which I am taking carefully into consideration with the Camps Association. I will make an announcement next month.
