§ 4. Mr. Roy Hughesasked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will seek powers to prevent tobacco firms from advertising to induce the collection of coupons as a condition of their making a contribution to major sporting events.
§ Mr. Gibson-WattI have nothing to add to the reply given to the hon. Member by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services on 9th May.—[Vol. 836, c. 298.]
§ Mr. HughesHas the Minister's attention been drawn to this rather disgusting advertisement by the firm of Rothman's? It contains a Government health warning, but its association of sport with smoking is presumably to induce our young people to die in a good cause. Will the Minister take what steps are necessary to have this advertisement withdrawn from the hoardings and see that our atheletes are provided from Government sources with the 973 necessary money if it cannot be raised by ordinary voluntary means?
§ Mr. Gibson-WattThe hon. Gentleman will be aware of the advantages in the creation of the Sports Council for Wales since the present Government took office. With regard to the particular matter he raises, I understand that there is soon to be a meeting between my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services and the tobacco manufacturers.
