HC Deb 22 May 1972 vol 837 cc988-9
26. Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, in addition to the advanced factory being built at Denaby Main, what other proposals he has for increasing employment opportunities in the Dearne Valley constituency.

Mr. Emery

The Government's regional policies and the proposals in the Industry Bill, which the hon. Gentleman will have the opportunity of voting for this afternoon, are very powerful inducements to encourage new industrial development and the modernisation of existing industry in the Dearne Valley.

Mr. Wainwright

Will the Minister not only quickly find a tenant for this factory, which will be completed very soon, but arrange for another advance factory to be built in my area? Second, will he consider making the area a special development district? Third, will he give serious thought to making a financial grant towards the building of a new canal bridge at Swinton, which would open up a quite large area for industrial development?

Mr. Emery

Industrial development certificates are generally freely available in the Dearne Valley. I think that meets the hon. Gentleman's second point. On his first point, I assure him that we are concerned to find tenants for the factory. On the third point, he will, I think, have to put a Question to another of my hon. Friends.
