HC Deb 16 March 1972 vol 833 cc750-1
15. Mr. Mather

asked the Minister of State for Defence what steps he is taking to increase the security of military installations in England, Wales and Scotland.

Lord Balniel

It would not be in the general interest to disclose the measures which have been taken. I can give an assurance, however, that steps have been taken to improve security to the maximum extent practicable.

Mr. Mather

Will my right hon. Friend say whether it is possible for the Territorial Army to assist in guard duties, thereby relieving Regular troops? Secondly, will my right hon. Friend take an early opportunity to congratulate the Home Secretary on the prompt action taken by the police to search the homes of 60 suspects yesterday in connection with the Aldershot outrage?

Lord Balniel

It would not be practical to use the Territorial Army in this particular rôle. I am sure that the whole House supports the police in the efforts which they are making to secure the arrests of those responsible for the murders at Aldershot.
