§ 27. Mr. Fowlerasked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what representations he has received so far during 1972 on the need for an independent broadcasting council.
§ Mr. ChatawayI have received from two hon. Members a resolution passed by a religious body in favour of setting up a broadcasting council, and three letters from members of the public also advocating a body of some kind to watch over the broadcasters.
§ Mr. FowlerDoes my right hon. Friend recognise that there is great public concern over this matter? Is it not extraordinarily ironic that an organisation like the B.B.C. should be so keen to put everybody else under independent scrutiny but so unwilling to submit to the same treatment itself?
§ Mr. ChatawayI take note of my hon. Friend's view. He will recall that when we debated this matter in the House some contrary views were expressed by hon. Members on both sides.
