HC Deb 14 June 1972 vol 838 cc1482-3
5. Mr. Redmond

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has studied the proposal submitted to him by the local government associations and the Greater London Council for the imposition of an additional local petrol tax; and whether he will make a statement on his attitude to this proposal.

Mr. Graham Page

I would refer my hon. Friend to the Answer I gave on 24th May, 1972, to the Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Basingstoke (Mr. David Mitchell).—[Vol. 837, c. 395.]

Mr. Redmond

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that half reply, may I ask him to take into account that a tax of this nature at this time and at the level suggested, 5p per gallon, would be wildly inflationary?

Mr. Page

This is being taken into account in the proposals which we are considering for a review of local government finance.
