§ 14. Mr. Ormeasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the prospects for increasing employment in Short Brothers Limited.
§ Mr. David HowellMy right hon. Friend recognises that large firms like 689 Short Brothers and Harland Limited are of immense importance in combating the serious unemployment situation in Northern Ireland. He is not aware however of any plans of the company which are likely to result in an expansion of employment in the near future.
§ Mr. OrmeMay I thank the Minister for the first part of his reply? Does he agree that an expansion of employment within this area is absolutely vital? Can he tell us whether there is any possibility of further orders? Can he tell us about the steps being taken to maintain a balanced work force within this plant?
§ Mr. HowellDealing first with the question of the expansion of the level of activity, the situation is not very hopeful at present but I am hopeful that the company should be able to maintain the existing substantial level of employment, although we shall have to watch that very carefully. On the question of a balanced work force and discrimination, the management here is, as I think the hon. Member knows, very conscious of the need to avoid discrimination and will continue to be so.
§ Mr. McMasterWill my right hon. Friend consider advising his right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence to place an order for the Short Skyvan which would considerably improve the mobility of the Army and be a great deal cheaper than using helicopters for the short transport rôle?
§ Mr. HowellI will certainly take note of that point.
