HC Deb 08 June 1972 vol 838 c677
1. Mr. Leslie Huckfield

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what access to their own personal records is allowed to internees.

The Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (Mr. David Howell)

An internee is not given access to his records but when appearing before the Advisory Committee is provided with a summary of the grounds for his internment.

Mr. Huckfield

I am grateful to the Under-Secretary for that information. Will he say who else has access to these files, what provision is made for their updating and erasure and who else can get hold of this information after an internee has been released?

Mr. Howell

Full particulars of these files are held by the police, and by the police only. The Ministry of Home Affairs also has some identification particulars, as does the governor of the internment centre. But the police, and the police only, have full particulars and they keep them up to date.
