HC Deb 18 July 1972 vol 841 cc387-8
Q1. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Prime Minister if he will pay an official visit to the Pitcairn Islands.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Edward Heath)

I have at present no plans to do so.

Mr. Dalyell

Did the French nuclear tests in the area of the Pitcairn Islands have the Prime Minister's approval?

The Prime Minister

The British Government's view about tests in the atmosphere is well known. We negotiated the test ban treaty, and I was with the Foreign Secretary when it was signed in Moscow. Our views are known to the French Government.

Mr. Hattersley

Did the French Government know our views on the programme of which those tests were a part? Has the right hon. Gentleman told the French Government categorically that there is no prospect of Anglo-French co-operation in the military sphere?

The Prime Minister

That matter has not been discussed.
