HC Deb 24 February 1972 vol 831 c1477
17. Mrs. Joyce Butler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects the dry cleaning code of practice for self-service laundries to become operative; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sharples

Copies of this code, which was published on 2nd February last, have been sent to the associations representing owners and operators of dry-cleaning establishments for distribution to their members. The trade is being encouraged to adopt the recommendations in the code as soon as practicable.

Mrs. Butler

I welcome the code but, bearing in mind the deaths which have already occurred, will the Minister say whether provision is made in the code for large notices, giving the name and address of the supervisor who can be approached if the machine breaks down, to be prominently displayed and maintained near the machines? Does the code cover ventilation, and does it cover employees who may not be covered by the Factories Acts?

Mr. Sharples

The best thing would be for me to send a copy of the code to the hon. Lady, as it is long and fairly complex.
