§ 6. Mr. Lambieasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the number of teachers at present in service who will be denied full pension because of the fact that their university course 1267 was interrupted by war service during 1939–45.
§ Mr. LambieThe hon. Gentleman must know that the numbers are very small indeed. Does he not realise that most of these teachers have given loyal service to the Scottish education system? In the present review of the Scottish teachers' superannuation scheme, will he guarantee to look at the problem and to clear up this anomalous situation once and for all?
§ Mr. MonroI certainly join the hon. Member in paying tribute to all Service men and women who served their country in the last war. Under the Superannuation Act, 1939, their pension rights were fully safeguarded. I agree that the working party should look at this, and I understand that it is doing so.
