HC Deb 09 February 1972 vol 830 cc1334-5
36. Mr. John D. Grant

asked the Lord President of the Council why all charges in the staff canteen at the Palace of Westminster have been increased by 25 per cent.

Dr. Reginald Bennett

I have been asked to reply.

As the staff canteen was running at a heavy loss, prices in general have had to be increased. Unfortunately, however, in the case of nine items the required increase was overestimated: these items have now been reduced.

Mr. Grant

While thanking the hon. Gentleman for that answer may I ask whether he is aware that the Government have a policy of restraining price increases to 5 per cent. wherever possible? Would he not agree, upon reconsideration, that it might be better if the House set a better example towards its own employees?

Dr. Bennett

This is certainly so but with the rate of losses on the catering side it would be quite impossible for such an increase to make much of an impression. Therefore the loss would have to be paid for through the pockets of. hon. Members. This is the dilemma.
