HC Deb 26 April 1972 vol 835 cc1542-3
35. Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations have been made to him concerning danger to traffic at the Sun Arch, Romsey, Hampshire; and what reply he has given.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Environment (Mr. Keith Speed)

The Mayor of Romsey has written to my right hon. Friend and I am sending my hon. and gallant Friend a copy of my reply, which explains that it is for Hampshire County Council, as highway authority, to consider what additional safety measures may be needed.

Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles

I am grateful to my hon. Friend for that reply. Does he realise that this is a new issue, in that some of these arches in rural districts are too low for container lorries to go underneath and that what happens occasionally is that a container clouts the bridge and falls on to passers-by? This is a big issue. Will my hon. Friend look into it?

Mr. Speed

It is an issue, but this is a principal road and the Hampshire County Council is the highway authority in the first instance.
