§ 26. Miss Joan Hallasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what studies are being sponsored by his Department for improving the collection and re-cycling of waste paper.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerThe Local Authorities Management Services and Computer Committee has recently published the Report of its C. & M. Work Study Panel on Waste Paper Salvage and the Department of Trade and Industry is offering financial assistance for research in recycling waste paper.
§ Miss HallI thank my right hon. Friend for that reply. May I draw his attention to the ordinary householder, who is given no information about separating paper from the rest of the rubbish? Why not give incentives as well as information, because the re-cycling of paper can help enormously in very large industry, particularly in reducing imports?
§ Mr. WalkerI very much agree with my hon. Friend. I assure her that we will do everything possible to advise local authorities and others upon ways of increasing the whole re-cycling process.
§ Mr. Arthur LewisWith the permission of my Member of Parliament, the hon. Member for Southgate (Mr. Berry), may I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he will have an investigation made into the London Borough of Enfield, where in certain districts the council not only refuses to accept waste paper and cartons but even refuses to take them when they are separated and put out? Surely that is wrong?
§ Mr. WalkerI shall, as always, consult my hon. Friend the Member for Southgate (Mr. Berry).
