§ 14. Mr. Rostasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress he is making to ensure that water boards are complying with his request to provide more recreational access to reservoirs; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Eldon GriffithsIn recent months the number of water undertakings who have shown a willingness to allow greater use of their reservoirs for recreational purposes has increased substantially. Where a regional sports council considers that more could reasonably be done and the undertaking is not prepared to do it, I am ready in suitable cases to take up the question with that undertaking.
§ Mr. RostIs the Under-Secretary of State aware that that reply will be most welcome to my constituents? Is he further aware that the local authorities in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire which are responsible for reservoirs in my constituency are not only dragging their feet in this matter but appear to be deliberately obstructing progress in making recreational facilities available on reservoirs? Would it not be appropriate for the Minister to send out a reminder to his excellent earlier memorandum, which might produce a little more action?
§ Mr. GriffithsWith respect to the earlier recommendations which were sent to 81 undertakings, no fewer than 34 have made or intend soon to make increases in their provision. In the case of my hon. Friend's local reservoirs, I am aware of the problem and I shall be glad to assist him in any way that I can.
