§ Mr. McManusOn a point of order, Mr. Speaker. I regret not having given you notice of my intention, but my failure to do so was unavoidable. As one who is not very learned in the procedures of the House, may I seek your guidance on a very important matter? When a Minister makes a statement which is published in the OFFICIAL REPORT and which is misleading, and when, on being asked about it, he makes no effort to clarify the situation, what redress have right hon. and hon. Members got? Is there any method by which a Minister may be required to publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT clarification of his original statement?
§ Mr. SpeakerThe hon. Gentleman has pointed out that he gave me no notice of this point of order. My predecessors from time to time have shown a wise reluctance to give guidance. I think that it will be found that they stated that it is not part of the Chair's duty to give guidance. Therefore I have no intention of giving the hon. Gentleman public guidance, but I am willing to try to help privately and to discuss the matter with him if he so wishes.
§ Mr. Arthur LewisFurther to that point of order, Mr. Speaker. Is it not the case that Ministers are always giving misleading replies?
