HC Deb 18 May 1971 vol 817 c1061
10. Mr. Kaufman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the purchasing power of the £ sterling now, taking it as 100p on 18th June, 1970.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

No later information has become available since my right hon. Friend's reply to a similar Question by the hon. Member on 27th April.

Mr. Kaufman

[Interruption.] Is not he aware that the rejection of 81 Conservative candidates out of 99 in the City of Manchester—[HON. MEMBERS: "Order."] —and 2,800 Labour gains in the rest of the country—

Hon. Members

Order.

Mr. Speaker

Order. Questions of order are for me.

Mr. Kaufman

—have demonstrated at a stroke what the people think about the lie on which the Conservative Party was elected?

Mr. Jenkin

I am sure that the hon. Gentleman was better employed doing public relations for the right hon. Member for Huyton (Mr. Harold Wilson).
