HC Deb 15 March 1971 vol 813 cc902-3
31. Mr. Clinton Davis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he last made representations to the South African Government concerning the use of armed South African police stationed in Rhodesia in support of the illegal régime.

The Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Mr. Joseph Godber)

On 17th February, Sir.

Mr. Davis

What has been the result of those representations? How many police have been withdrawn from Rhodesia by the South African Government? Is it not clear that the South African Government care not a tinker's cuss for the representations which the Government are making with regard to this matter?

Mr. Godber

The South African Government have so far resisted the approaches which have been made by this Government and by the previous Government on this matter, but we are continuing to press them for withdrawal of these police.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

In dealing with this matter, will Her Majesty's Government also make representations to the Governments of Tanzania and Zambia against the harbouring and training of invaders of Rhodesian territory contrary to international law, to the Charter of the United Nations, and also to the Charter of the Organisation of African Unity?

Mr. Godber

My hon. Friend's question draws attention to the complications surrounding this whole problem, and I have nothing to add to what has been said on it.
