HC Deb 15 March 1971 vol 813 c888
2. Mr. Lane

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what discussions he has had with the Post Office about possible changes in postal services in the aftermath of the strike.

Mr. Chataway

I have had a number of discussions of a general nature.

Mr. Lane

Would my right hon. Friend try to ensure that any changes are not tailored too much to suit commerce and industry but that full weight is given to the convenience of householders, particularly old people, to whom the post means so much?

Mr. Chataway

Yes. Before the Post Office formulated any definite proposals, it would have to consult the Post Office Users National Council on which those interests would be represented.

Mr. Rost

Will my right hon. Friend also consider permanently lifting the Post Office's monopoly in the transmission of mails, in the national interest, in order to encourage competition and to allow people to shop around?

Mr. Chataway

No, Sir. I am afraid that that is a proposition which I cannot entertain.
