HC Deb 15 March 1971 vol 813 c907
38. Mr. Coleman

asked the Secretary of State for Wales whether he will reconsider his decision, conveyed to the hon. Member for Neath by letter, not to receive a deputation from the Neath Borough Council to discuss the further implications of the closure of the Billet Mill, at the Albion Steel Works, Briton Ferry; and if he will make a statement.

The Secretary of State for Wales (Mr. Peter Thomas)

I have already fully explained to the hon. Member the circumstances surrounding the closure, and have offered to see him to discuss the matter further. Every effort is being made to find alternative work for redundant workers.

Mr. Coleman

The right hon. and learned Gentleman will, I am sure, realise the serious concern felt in the area not only about this closure but about the prospect of the works and future employment in the area. Will he reconsider his decision not to meet a deputation from Neath Borough Council?

Mr. Thomas

I am aware of the concern, which I share. I wrote to the hon. Gentleman at some length on 26th February and offered to meet him and the right hon. Member for Aberavon (Mr. John Morris) to discuss this matter further. So far I have not had any response to my offer. That would be an obvious preliminary and we could then discuss whether any benefit would be obtained by my receiving a further deputation. I hope that the hon. Gentleman will get in touch with me in response to the letter I sent to him.
