HC Deb 10 March 1971 vol 813 c414
57. Mr. Fox

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress has been made in determining the feasibility of road-pricing as a form of motor taxation.

Mr. Peyton

The Road Research Laboratory has carried out extensive examination of road-pricing devices. At present the difficulties involved in using them on the roads appear to outweigh the advantages.

Mr. Fox

I am sure the answer which has been given will delight many people who regard this system as completely unacceptable for reducing traffic congestion in our cities, and see it only as a means of raising further tax from the motorist.

Mr. Peyton

I would never lose an opportunity to give delight to my hon. Friend.
