HC Deb 10 March 1971 vol 813 c392
16. Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will undertake a further examination of the problem of flooding in the vicinity of Stone Mill, Maltby, which followed construction of the M18 motorway, including an inspection of the affected area.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

No, Sir. I recently wrote to the hon. Member on this subject in the light of reports from the engineers responsible for the construction and maintenance of this motorway. I am satisfied that nothing would be gained from further investigations.

Mr. Hardy

Will the Minister reconsider this matter, remembering that the incidence and severity of flooding were greatly increased as a result of the construction of the M18 motorway? My constituents and all those who know the area are confident about that. Is it not a fact that there is great dissatisfaction in many parts of the country over the whole question of drainage from motorways?

Mr. Heseltine

We have investigated this matter closely. I am sure that the hon. Gentleman will take into account the fact that while the total catchment area of the Maltby Dyke is about 615 acres, the area of the motorway is only about 44 acres.
