HC Deb 10 March 1971 vol 813 c386
5. Mr. Bob Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will have the motorway service area dining facilities adjacent to the carriageway of the MI at Newport Pagnell protected by crash barriers.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Environment (Mr. Michael Heseltine)

The crash barriers are on order and will be erected shortly.

Mr. Brown

I am grateful to the Minister for that reply, but will he treat the installation of the crash barriers as a matter of grave urgency, bearing in mind the extreme danger to life and limb should a heavy vehicle run off the road at this point? Further, will he accept that it would be sensible to survey other service areas lest the same sort of dangerous situation might prevail there, too?

Mr. Heseltine

It is our intention to have the crash barriers up by the end of this month. I do not think that it could be done faster than that. I shall look at the supplementary point which the hon. Gentleman makes.
