§ 38. Mr. Greville Jannerasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many prosecutions have been instituted in the City of Leicester under the Protection from Eviction Act, 1964, and under the equivalent provisions of the Rent Act, 1965; and how many of these have resulted in convictions.
§ Mr. ChannonI will, with permission, circulate the figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
§ Mr. JannerWill the hon. Gentleman inquire why the figures for prosecutions for illegal eviction in Leicester in 1968 and 1969 were so low as to be almost non-existent? If he finds that the law is not being properly enforced or that tenants are afraid to complain, will he take appropriate action to protect them?
§ Mr. ChannonI hope that that is not the position. The figures for 1970 show that four persons were prosecuted on ten charges and four were convicted on eight charges.
Following is the informationThere were no prosecutions in Leicester in 1965. In 1966 three persons were prosecuted on four charges of illegal eviction and all were convicted. In 1967 five persons were prosecuted on seven charges; two persons were convicted on three charges. There were no prosecutions in 1968 or 1969. Provisional figures for 1970 are that four persons were prosecuted on ten charges and four were convicted on eight charges.
