HC Deb 10 March 1971 vol 813 c409
43. Mr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will state the checks made on foreign lorries entering Great Britain.

Mr. Peyton

Spot checks are made at ports and at the roadside on mechanical fitness, documentation, and compliance with construction and use regulations.

Mr. Clark

Is the Minister satisfied that these checks are adequate? Has he seen reports in various periodicals which suggest that an increasing number of foreign lorries are of excessive length and excessive weight?

Mr. Peyton

I am not satisfied that checks on foreign vehicles are adequate, and I am considering whether I shall have to ask the House for further powers.
