HC Deb 01 March 1971 vol 812 cc1226-7
Mr. C. Pannell

On a point of order. With great respect to you, Mr. Speaker, and no disrespect to the hon. Member for Faversham (Mr. Moate), who has just asked a Private Notice Question, may I ask whether you, Mr. Speaker, will look again at the rules under which you allow Private Notice Questions on accidents to be asked? The practice originally started with a famous mine disaster back in the days of Keir Hardie, but now we sometimes have road accidents in fog on the Ml when 40 vehicles are involved and a dozen people are killed. In the railway accident at Sheerness there was, fortunately, only one person killed. Last week you refused a Private Notice Question when two policemen were killed in Belfast. If the Private Notice Question procedure is to have the respect which you, Mr. Speaker, and I wish it to have, may I suggest that you, as a new Speaker, might consider the creation of another set of rules for your guidance and that of the House in future?

Mr. Speaker

I am most grateful to the right hon. Gentleman. I will consider what he has said.
