HC Deb 24 June 1971 vol 819 c1575
16. Mr. Molloy

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is now in a position to make a statement relating to the review of the Firearms Act, 1968.

Mr. Sharples

The review is making good progress, but I cannot yet estimate when it will be completed.

Mr. Molloy

I thank the hon. Gentleman for that reply. When the review is complete will he make a statement to the House? Will he also consider points which have previously been made in the House by many hon. Members on both sides who are perturbed about the mild sentences which have been dished out to hardened thugs who carry firearms? Is it not time we made it illegal and imposed heavy penalties for carrying a gun in any circumstances?

Mr. Sharples

That suggestion would involve certain difficulties. However, I assure the hon. Gentleman that the outcome of the review will be communicated to Parliament.
