HC Deb 10 June 1971 vol 818 cc1227-8
Q1. Mr. John Fraser

asked the Prime Minister if he will make a statement about his recent official meeting with President Pompidou of France.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Edward Heath)

I did so on 24th May.

Mr. Fraser

Does the Prime Minister recall that, in that statement, he said very little about the running down of the sterling balances, whereas the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster yesterday said that the Prime Minister had reached a clear understanding with President Pompidou? Can he tell us precisely what was agreed about the running down of the sterling balances, and whether the President took him seriously?

The Prime Minister

The hon. Member has raised a question of considerable importance. To answer it in detail in a supplementary answer would not be appropriate. Perhaps, with your permission, Mr. Speaker, I could answer it more fully at the end of Questions.
