§ 17. Mr. Clinton Davisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is now able to make a statement on the steps to be taken by Her Majesty's Government consequent upon the decision in Buckokeversusthe Greater London Council.
§ Mr. SharplesMy right hon. Friend is not yet ready to do so.
§ Mr. DavisIs the hon. Gentleman aware that drivers of police vehicles, fire appliances and ambulances should not, as they do now, have to run a hazard when they cross red lights when it is safe to do so? Is he further aware that the decision of the Court of Appeal was five months ago, on 15th February, when it recommended that there should be legislation? Legislation could easily be introduced to deal with this matter. Does he recall that the court described the activities of the Home Office with regard to this matter as being utterly pusillanimous?
§ Mr. SharplesYes, Sir, but the court also made clear that opinion on this matter is by no means unanimous. I am considering with my Ministerial colleagues whether the law should be amended on the lines recommended by the court. Consultations must take place before this can be done.
