HC Deb 07 July 1971 vol 820 c1335
34. Mrs. Kellett-Bowman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement about the rôle of the Local Government Boundary Commission and, in particular, whether the Commission will be able to adjust county boundaries in future.

Mr. Peter Walker

My consultations with the local authority associations have shown there is very general agreement on the proposal to set up a permanent and independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England. It is intended that the Commission shall make recommendations about local government boundaries and electoral areas. The Commission's future work, after reorganisation, will accordingly cover all boundaries and it will be able to propose adjustments to county boundaries.
