HC Deb 28 April 1971 vol 816 cc408-9
15. Mr. Parkinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the number of Greater London Council dwellings modernised in 1966; and how this compares with the number modernised in 1970.

Mr. Peter Walker

I presume my hon. Friend is referring to dwellings it itself owns. The Greater London Council modernised 576 of its dwellings in 1966 and 1,435 in 1970.

Mr. Parkinson

That encouraging reply will give much pleasure in the London area. May I urge my right hon. Friend and his colleagues to continue to press forward with this programme, which can do a great deal to bring about an improvement in London's housing conditions?

Mr. Walker

There is currently a mammoth increase in the number of private houses that are being modernised.
