§ 21. Mr. Martenasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the negotiations for a settlement of the Anguillan problem.
§ The Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Mr. Joseph Godber)Negotiations are continuing in the search for a settlement. Her Majesty's Government have sought hard to secure an agreed solution, but the present unsatisfactory position cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely.
§ Mr. MartenIn view of the anxieties of the Anguillan people, will the Minister tell us when a solution is likely to come about?
§ Mr. GodberI understand that anxiety. It is my desire that the problem should be resolved in the near future, but it has proved very difficult and intractable. I hope that it will not be long before I am in a position to make a statement.
