HC Deb 05 April 1971 vol 815 cc22-3
22. Sir A. Meyer

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will now grant intermediate area status to those portions of north Wales which are outside the Welsh development area.

Sir J. Eden

No, Sir. Their circumstances do not justify such a designation.

Sir A. Meyer

Is my hon. Friend aware that all the arguments he has adduced for giving intermediate status to Oswestry apply with equal force to Flintshire which is entirely surrounded by areas having intermediate or development area status? Is he further aware that this absence of any kind of incentive for investment in the Flintshire area is having an adverse effect on the tourist industry, which is, after all, the area's staple fare?

Sir J. Eden

I have considerable sympathy with areas which are subject to seasonal fluctuation due to their dependence on the tourist industry. As to designation of areas, we intend to keep a close watch on present coverage to ensure that it continues to reflect the current balance of needs.

Sir A. Meyer

On a point of order, Mr. Speaker. In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall seek to raise the matter on the Adjournment.
