HC Deb 05 April 1971 vol 815 c3
4. Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is the value of Australian sugar exports to the United Kingdom.

The Minister for Trade (Mr. Michael Noble)

£14 million in the year ended June, 1970.

Mr. Moate

I thank my right hon. Friend for that answer. Does he agree that it is vitally important to the stability of world sugar prices that Australian sugar should be maintained within the renewal arrangements of the Commonwealth Sugar Agreements and that it would be going back on the many commitments which this Government have given if they were not to offer full Commonwealth safeguards for Commonwealth trade in the context of the Common Market negotiations?

Mr. Noble

It is because of the importance of this trade to Queensland, Australia, that very special arrangements are being sought by my right hon. Friend in the negotiations.
