HC Deb 28 October 1970 vol 805 cc200-1
12. Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment why, on 23rd July 1970, the fire brigade unit at the House of Commons was not equipped with breathing apparatus; and if he will make a statement.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Environment (Mr. Paul Channon)

Until the incident on 23rd July it was thought sufficient for the London Fire Brigade, who are immediately warned of any fire or similar incident, to provide any special equipment required. Respirators affording protection against CS Gas have now been provided for the use of the Fire Brigade unit at the Palace of Westminster.

Mr. Mudd

Has training been given in the use of this apparatus and the relevant appliances?

Mr. Channon

I understand that these respirators, which provide adequate protection against CS gas, require no special training in their use.
