HC Deb 26 November 1970 vol 807 cc593-4
12. Mr. Iremonger

asked the Minister of State for Defence what is the scrap value of H.M.S. "Belfast".

Mr. Kirk

If we decided to dispose of H.M.S. "Belfast" as scrap, her value would be the best price obtainable by competitive tendering among United Kingdom shipbreaking firms. It would not be in the public interest to give an estimate of what this might be.

Mr. Iremonger

Since this ship would make the ideal monument to the Royal Navy in the age of steam, as did the "Victory" in the age of sail, will the Minister consult the Secretary of State for Education and Science about the suggestion for the vessel to be moored off Greenwich as a naval museum? Will he consult my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Winchester (Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles) who commanded the "Belfast" on her last commission?

Mr. Kirk

That is a rather different question. In fact this matter is under consideration.
