§ 25. Mr. Geoffrey Finsbergasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action the Government are taking to encourage the improvement of older houses.
§ Mr. AmeryThe Government are sponsoring a national publicity drive to convince owners of the benefits of improving older houses with the aid of grants. This is being supplemented by local house improvement months in selected cities and towns throughout the country.
§ Mr. FinsbergI thank my right hon. Friend for that Answer, but will he consider sending a circular to local authorities asking them to point out the benefits that can accrue from a policy of rehabilitation as opposed to a policy of complete redevelopment and destruction of existing communities?
§ Mr. AmeryI am in full sympathy with my hon. Friend. Circulars have 1069 been sent out, and a campaign is being conducted throughout the country. Only the day before yesterday I was at Salford and Keighley taking a hand in it myself.
§ Mr. FreesonWill the right hon. Gentleman say when it is proposed to publish and circulate the extensive manual on this subject which was in preparation under the previous Administration?
§ Mr. AmeryAs I have not had notice of that question, I had better look into the matter and write to the hon. Gentleman.
