HC Deb 07 May 1970 vol 801 cc572-3
46. Mr. Stodart

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if a decision has yet been reached in his consideration of proposals for the building of an opera house in Edinburgh.

Miss Jennie Lee

A request for a Government grant towards this project was made through the Arts Council in March this year and is under consideration.

Mr. Stodart

Will the right hon. Lady give earnest consideration to reaching a decision on this matter which is of great importance to the future of the Edinburgh Festival?

Miss Lee

I wish to thank and congratulate canny Scots in Edinburgh on having at long last decided that they are willing to pay rather more than half the capital cost of establishing an opera in Edinburgh. The ball clearly is in our court.
