HC Deb 06 May 1970 vol 801 cc379-80
2. Sir G. Nabarro

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what revised estimate he has now made of the total cost of United States military aircraft, including the Phantom, to be delivered and accepted in the year to 5th April, 1971, expressed in£s sterling; and to what extent reciprocal sales of such aircraft as the Harrier jump-jet and other types and Rolls Royce jet engines, to the United States of America diminish the United Kingdom's outgoings in the year stated.

The Secretary of State for Defence (Mr. Denis Healey)

No United States military aircraft are due to be delivered in the current financial year but continuing dollar expenditure associated with these purchases will amount to about£60 million this year. The answer to the second part of the Question is well over£20 million.

Sir G. Nabarro

Those two then, comparing the one with the other, mean that the net outgoings in this year will be only of the order of£40 million?

Mr. Healey

The situation is even better than that, because expenditure in dollars by American Forces stationed in this country in itself is sufficient to cover the whole£60 million to which I have referred.
