HC Deb 25 March 1970 vol 798 cc1417-8
21. Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has received the report of the inquiry into the Fraserburgh lifeboat disaster; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

The Royal National Life-Boat Institution has sent me a copy of its own confidential inquiry into the disaster. In view of the public concern over this disaster my right hon. Friend has decided to order a formal investigation into the accident to the lifeboat under Section 466 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894. The Royal National Life-Boat Institution has told me that it would welcome this.

Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

Is the Minister aware that this is a wise decision which will be widely welcomed, particularly in the North-East of Scotland, and not least by those connected with the lifeboat service?

Mr. Roberts

I am sure that that is the general view, particularly in Scotland.
