HC Deb 16 March 1970 vol 798 cc26-7
42. Mr. Wellbeloved

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications to what extent he estimates that the campaign against television licence evasion has been successful in London.

Mr. Stonehouse

In the three months ended 31st December, 1969, nearly 9,700 extra colour television licences and nearly 54,500 extra monochrome television licences were issued in the Post Office's London Postal Region. These licences produce about £434,000 extra revenue annually.

Mr. Wellbeloved

Is my right hon. Friend aware that that is a very good beginning? Will he continue his campaign to encourage the forgetful to renew their licences and discourage the dishonest from evading payment?

Mr. Stonehouse

We are satisfied with the success of the campaign so far. Overall, it has raised about an extra £1 million in annual income. But we shall continue it.
