HC Deb 12 March 1970 vol 797 cc1537-8
9. Mr. Peter M. Jackson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why Detective-Sergeant Constable, late of the Chelsea Drug Squad and currently serving in Scotland Yard, was appointed to investigate allegations made byThe Timesnewspaper into corruption by members of the Metropolitan Police Force when a complaint had been lodged in respect of inquiries he had been under- taking into offences under the Dangerous Drugs Acts.

Mr. Callaghan

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis informs me that when this officer was included in the team investigating The Times allegations he was not regarded as the subject of a specific complaint. When, in court proceedings on 26th January this year, he was named, he was at once posted to other duties.

Mr. Jackson

I accept the reply given by my right hon. Friend, but does not he agree that there were two allegations pending against this police officer which were known about by his superior officer? Furthermore, will he tell the House when the inquiries which are being undertaken into these two charges will be complete?

Mr. Callaghan

No, Sir, I am afraid I cannot give an answer to the last part of the question; this is a very complicated matter. I have already answered the first part of the question.
