HC Deb 06 July 1970 vol 803 cc321-2
35. Mr. Peter Emery

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what steps are to be taken to improve television reception and increase the number of channels available in the West Country.

Mr. Chataway

The B.B.C. and the I.T.A. expect that transmissions of B.B.C. 1 and B.B.C. 2 and I.T.V. (Westward Television) on U.H.F. with 625-line definition and in colour will start from Stockland Hill towards the end of 1971.

Mr. Emery

I thank my right hon. Friend for his reply, which many people will welcome considerably as it is a matter of major importance for the West Country. May I ask him how far it will be possible to receive the colour programme from Stockland Hill in the northern area?

Mr. Chataway

I am afraid that I am not able to give that figure, but I know that this change will mean substantial improvements in reception in the West Country.
