HC Deb 06 July 1970 vol 803 cc310-1
46. Mr. Lane

asked the Minister of Technology whether he is satisfied with the solid smokeless fuel supply prospects for the coming winter; and if he will make a statement.

Sir J. Eden

As the previous Government indicated, the situation may be difficult. I am therefore urgently looking into the position and will make a statement as soon as possible.

Mr. Lane

Is my hon. Friend aware that he will have strong support for any action that he takes to prevent in future the failures of co-ordination which have occurred in the last two or three years and which led to this situation?

Sir J. Eden

I am sure that it is right today to make certain that the necessary supplies are available.

Mr. Barnett

Has the hon. Gentleman not had information, from the North-West in particular, that regardless of what the weather next winter will be, there is a definite shortage of smokeless fuel and that people in the North-West are anxious to know what action will be taken?

Sir J. Eden

The North-West is one of the areas which are particularly affected by the present situation. That is why I am looking into the matter so urgently.
