HC Deb 06 July 1970 vol 803 cc307-8
38. Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Technology what is the latest total of grants and loans approved by the Shipbuilding Industry Board, distinguishing between sums already paid and liabilities undertaken.

Mr. Ridley

The figures are £16.97 million in grants, of which £13.63 million has been paid, and £15.81 million in loans, of which £13.06 million has been paid. In addition the Board has subscribed £3 million for shares in Upper Clyde Shipbuilders Ltd.

Mr. Wingfield Digby

Can my hon. Friend say how many of these liabilities will fall due next year?

Mr. Ridley

Not without notice, I am afraid, but I will write to my hon. Friend giving the information which he requires.

Mr. Heffer

Can the hon. Gentleman give a clear assurance that the arrangements with the shipbuilding industry on Merseyside for Cammell Laird will continue under the present Government?

Mr. Ridley

That does not arise on the Question before the House.

39. Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Technology when the Report of the Shipbuilding Industry Board for the year ended 31st March, 1970 will be available.

Mr. Ridley

In the autumn.

Mr. Wingfield Digby

Will my hon. Friend try to see that these reports, which are quite short, are published a little earlier in the year in future?

Mr. Ridley

The report will still be published within the statutory period for laying before Parliament, but there are many persons who have to consider it before it can be laid before the House. I am doing my best to expedite it.
