HC Deb 06 July 1970 vol 803 cc318-9
27. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what is the present salary of the Chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation; and why he has been given permission to keep outside full-time appointments, contrary to the general practice for the holders of such offices.

Mr. Chataway

The present salary is £6,000 per annum. I understand that he has no outside full-time appointments.

Mr. Lewis

Will the Minister look it up again? If he does, he will find that the Chairman has several lucrative appointments, even if they are not full-time. In view of the practice of the late Government of appointing ex-Tory Ministers to these jobs, would he now reverse the process and appoint ex-Labour Ministers, and bear in mind the right hon. George Brown?

Mr. Chataway

If there were suitable candidates, I am sure that they would be very carefully considered.
