§ 16. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Technology why he has given 306 approval and permission to the Central Electricity Generating Board to discharge unwashed sulphur dioxide from the chimneys of Battersea Power Station; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Sir J. EdenApproval for an experimental period of two years was given on 12th May. The object was to reduce the pollution of the Thames and improve the atmosphere in the neighbourhood of the station.
§ Mr. Arthur LewisI do not blame the hon. Gentleman for the original decision, of course. Is he aware that there is some doubt about whether this may be more damaging to the brickwork of buildings, particularly historic buildings such as the Abbey and this House? Had his Department taken the advice of all those interested parties before reaching this decision?
§ Sir J. EdenOn the last point, the Department fully consulted all the interested parties, including the other Departments of State and the Chief Alkali Inspector. This has been an experimental period of two years only. On the face of it, it appears rather surprising that this decision was taken, but it seems sensible. I will send the hon. Gentleman a copy of the Press release put out at the time.
